General Information

In this course we shall concentrate on the evolution, diversity and ecology of living organisms. You will not be a professional biologist at the end of this course, but we hope that you will be informed enough to understand and appreciate some biological concepts and issues relevant to your future endeavours. Biology 1116/3 (as well as 1115/3) is a pre-requisite for all advanced courses in the Biology Department. The successful completion of these courses will allow you to pursue further studies in the various sub-disciplines of Biology such as Plant and Animal Biology, Genetics, Medical Rehabilitation, Optometry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine. This information sheet will provide answers to some of the more common questions about the course, and includes an outline of the lectures and a list of the approximate examination dates. Take the time to read it. If you need any further information, contact any of the people listed above.

Organization of the course

This Web Site services my two sections this winter 2006 term.  For the Campus Manitoba sections, the lecture component of the course will be presented during two 75 minute lectures (Tuesdays and Thursdays) starting at 1:00 PM via the Ilink Campus Manitoba Web system.  For the University of Winnipeg section 003, the 75 minute lectures are held each Tuesday and Thursday at 11:30 am in Room 4M31.  There will be one, three hour laboratory class per week. Details of the lecturer topics, are given below. The laboratory classes are loosely coordinated with the lectures. Details of the laboratory classes are given in the laboratory manual.

Your Lecturer

Dr. Kent Simmons. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Biology, a Masters in Natural Resources Management, and a Ph.D. in Aquatic Toxicology. His research interest is in aquatic ecology and toxicology, and the application of aquatic ecology to forensics.

All of the Lecturers and Laboratory Instructors involved in the course can give you help and advice. They can be contacted after class, or as indicated, by e-mail or telephone.  Note: Please use the email system within this WebCT site to contact your Dr. Simmons.

What do you need to buy?

You should buy the textbook. It is also the textbook used in Biology 1115/3. We think that it is well written and comprehensive and it covers the whole spectrum of Biology. If you continue on in Biology you will find it a useful resource for more advanced courses. Read the interviews with the scientists at the beginning of each unit and see why they think that Biology is exciting! You may want to buy the Student Study Guide which summarizes and organizes the material in each chapter and contains useful self tests.

For Campus Manitoba Students, you must receive a copy of the lecture notes and a copy of the Laboratory Manual. These will be sold through the Brandon University Campus Manitoba suppliers.  Check with your Campus Manitoba site resource coordinator for details.  The lab manual for the University of Winnipeg labs will be on sale in the first week of classes in January.

Assessment of Performance

Your overall grade is determined on the basis of your performance on tests and assignments in both the lecture and the laboratory components of the course. The lecture component of the course will be assessed by a Mid-term Examination and a Final Examination. These examinations will account for 60% of the marks in the course. The laboratory component will be assessed by a laboratory mid-term examination, and a second laboratory examination at the end of the course, and number of assignments. The marks for the laboratory account for the remaining 40% of the marks for the course. A detailed list of these assessed items and their dates is given below.

Format of Examinations and Tests

The lecture material will be examined by "Multiple Choice" questions in both the Mid-term and Final Examinations. You will be required to select the correct answer(s) from a choice of 4 or 5. The questions will be designed to test your recall of facts and your understanding of principles. Your answers will be analyzed by computer. The Mid-term Examination will be given during class time and will last for about 90 minutes. The Final Examination will last for three hours and will examine the entire course, concentrating on information presented after the Mid-term Examination.

Attendance Policy

Attendance in lectures and laboratory classes is not mandatory. However, you will be tested on the information presented in them, whether you are there or not. If you skip a laboratory class and are not present when an assignment is handed out you will not be able to make up the marks. If you have an unavoidable appointment or are sick and cannot get to your laboratory class, contact your Laboratory Instructor. If you are unable to write a lecture test/examination contact your resource coordinator immediately. We will give you as much help as we can, but you have to be responsible. NOTE: Friday March 3, 2006 is the final day for withdrawal without academic penalty.

Prerequisites

Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S, Chemistry 40S and either 05.1115/6 or Biology 40S, or their equivalents, are prerequisites for Biology 1116/3. Some of you will have been given permission to take one of them concurrently.

Evolution and Ecology 1116/3 Web Site (This is where you are now!)

This year there will be a web site set-up that will contain information you will find useful in completing the course. There will be a set of lecture notes, this course outline, and other pages that will announce important dates, upcoming exams, and links to other biology resources on the Internet.

There is also a new resource to help you through the materials in the lab. This is called the "Virtual Microscope". It basically is all the things you do and see in the labs placed on-line! This is not a replacement for the lab but will allow you to more easily review the lab materials outside of lab time. To get to the 05.1116/3 online lab manual click here or on the link below.  We will be using much of the material in the Virtual Microscope during our lectures as well.

Campus Manitoba 05.1116/3 Evolution, Ecology, and Biodiversity online Lab Manual.

University of Winnipeg 05.1116/3 Evolution, Ecology and Biodiversity online Lab Manual.

VERY IMPORTANT: While the online lecture notes and lab manuals are useful additional learning resources, the instructor may stress different aspects, according to his particular expertise. Therefore, as with any course, you must attend lectures and labs if you hope to do well on the exams.
