UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG
CAMPUS MANITOBA
WELCOME TO THE 1116/3 Campus Manitoba Lab Manual online!
This home page is the beginning of an experiment in the use of the World Wide Web as a tool to help students in the Campus Manitoba Evolution and Ecology and Biodiversity 05.1116/3 course, master some of the material in this first year university course. This course is an introductory biology course into the principles and concepts of evolution and ecology. The course is one of the two introductory half courses offered by the Department of Biology that students would take in their first year at the University of Winnipeg. Campus Manitoba students, however don't come to the U of W to take this course. These students live in northern and rural communities and take the course through the Campus Manitoba program.
This web site is for anyone who is interested in biology. Of course the people who should be the most interested in this site are those actually taking this course for credit!
What is the purpose of this online lab manual?
Most students who have ever taken an introductory biology course with a lab, have always complained that they didn't have enough time in the lab to look at all those thousands of microscope slides. (There weren't really thousands of slides, it just felt like there were). Most biology departments simply don't have the space or the resources to keep the labs open long enough to allow students the time to adequately view the slides. This web site will provide the students excess to all the images they see in the lab. It is not meant to replace the lab, but is simply another resource for students to access, when studying the material and reviewing for lab exams.
I hope the site will be of interest to everyone.
Very Important! This lab manual contains the labs for the Campus Manitoba 05.1116/3 lab students. Due to logistical considerations associated with campus Manitoba lab sites, this set of labs is different than those taught on campus at the University of Winnipeg. On Campus UofW students are directed to the lab manual they obtained in class.

Each of the links below will take you to one of the Evolution and Ecology 1116-3 labs. Once you are in a lab, you will be able to read the introductory material about the slides you are asked to view in the lab. If you are taking the course you will have all of this in your lab manual, and probably won't want to read all that stuff again. If so, you can go straight to the slides. However, I have incuded all the text descriptions of the slide for those visiting the site who are not in the course and who might like a little background on the slides. Once you are viewing a slide you may notice that some of the slides have labels on them. This is not something you usually see in a microscope! If you click on the labels it will take you to another page with a more detailed description of that structure's function. Each slide page will also allow you to change the magnification of that image or will allow you to put the slide away and return to the page in the lab manual where you were last.
